Don’t want to store your Smallpdf files online? No problem! Here’s how to change your document storage settings.

Some people might like having their Smallpdf files stored online for easy access, but it’s completely understandable if you’d prefer to save your documents locally. This is why we’ve made this an easy-to-change preference in your account settings. Carry on reading to find out exactly how to do this, but first, let’s go over some information about Smallpdf’s secure document storage!

How Long Does Smallpdf Store My Documents?

As a standard rule, Smallpdf stores your uploaded documents for just one hour and then we’ll delete them from our servers—so make sure you download and save your PDFs before then! There are however some exceptions. For our eSign tool we store PDFs for 14 days from the time that you send a signature request, or when document signing is complete, so that all signees have adequate time to process these documents. The other exception is if you have a Smallpdf account with document storage set up, which means that your files will be available to you online through Smallpdf for as long as you need them.

How Secure Is Smallpdf’s Document Storage?

It’s normal—good, even—to worry about how secure online document storage is. Smallpdf works tirelessly to ensure your files are safe with us. We use TLS encryption to ensure all file transfers with our tools are safe and secure. On top of that, we comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is a legal framework that protects EU citizens’ data with regards to the collection and processing of personal information. Smallpdf is also ISO/IEC 27001 certified, meaning that our standards for secure file storage are extremely high, and that we’re always looking for ways to improve even further.

Although Smallpdf’s document storage is a safe place to store your files, we completely understand that not everyone feels comfortable storing their documents online. So we leave it up to our users to choose whether they want to use this feature or not. To check whether document storage has been disabled or to change it yourself, follow these easy steps.

How To Disable Smallpdf's Document Storage

  1. Sign in to your Smallpdf account.

  2. Open the drop-down menu from top right.
