Why Is Sustainability Important?

While sustainability has been a major talking point around the world for many years, pressure is mounting for businesses large and small to do their part. With rapidly advancing climate change, shown by extreme weather events and unprecedented environmental degradation, consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of their buying habits and critical of the businesses that make the products they buy.

With this increasing pressure, businesses not only have a responsibility to act, but, with the right perspective, they have an opportunity to be a force for good in support of an environment—and future—that is hanging in the balance.

What Is a Sustainable Business?

Sustainability can mean different things to different businesses, but a one-size-fits-all directive can be encompassed by preservation of resources, consideration for the environment, and, finally, the commitment to ensuring that future generations not only survive, but thrive in the environment that’s left to them.

Even though climate change requires big preventative and mitigating steps for environmental preservation, it’s also true that small steps in the right direction can amount to great change. With the many advantages associated with environmentally considerate business, the return on investment of sustainability amounts to far more than just doing the right thing—it adds up fiscally, too.

Added Benefits of a Sustainable Business

A sustainable business, or one in earnest pursuit of sustainability, has the added benefit of being attractive to employees, investors, and customers alike, and has the distinct advantage of leading with respectable, future-focused values. These value-driven benefits come with long-term gains for business survival.

One of the lowest hanging fruits of the sustainable business movement is the move towards a paperless office. Accessible to anyone with an internet connection, the digital revolution doesn’t have to be a disqualifier, but a leg-up to the future of business.

Sustainability may be about the environment, human rights, social and moral values, which to some can seem like a heavy burden to bear. But with the right tools, tackling sustainability can be a gift, a way of life, and a privilege of service to many generations to come.
