Two simple tips on how to set up a productive workspace at home! Get your work done and get it done faster.

Working from home is great! You get to hang out all day in your pajamas, wake up at 8:55 for a 9:00am, have virtual brunch with your friends at 11—wait a second?

This isn’t working from home! That’s a mini-vacation.

Stepping over the invisible line between working from home and just hanging out there is all too easy. Your subconscious know where you are and doesn’t like you breaking routine!

So how do you keep your work from piling up more and more? How do you ensure that you’re hard at work and not hardly working? We’ve been where you are and we’ve spoken to many people like you. Here are just two very simple things you can and should do to keep yourself on track:

Make a Workspace

One of the benefits of going into the office is that you have a very strong demarcation between work and home. You get up, you commute, and you go to the office. When your home is the office, this demarcation is destroyed. As a result, you have to set your own boundaries.

A great way to do this is to create a dedicated workspace. While it may be tempting to lounge in bed while clacking away at your presentation, you’ll be less likely to slip into a Netflix Binge if you choose to work in a dedicated work location. Also, studies have shown that if you work from your bed (or in fact even your bedroom), your sleep is very likely to suffer, as the brain associates places with what you do there. That’s also one of the reasons why you shouldn’t do too much social media while in bed, by the way.

So set up camp at your desk! If not, maybe head to the kitchen or dining room while you’re working. The key take-away here is to keep yourself away from distractions and your bedroom separate from your workspace.

Keep a Schedule

This is critical. Not just for working remotely but in general. Make a schedule. It will keep you productive and give your workday a framework. Wake up at 8. Work until 10, then stretch your legs and go for a walk. When you have a routine, your work will feel natural, as opposed to a haphazard thought process you stumble in and out of.

With your mind alert, you’ll be able to knock out all that work that has been piling up. Have some documents piling up? Not a problem! Use Smallpdf’s Compress tool to shrink that file size! No bandwidth cap will get in your way!
